Tongue and Tine

Privacy

A static site has very little to hold on to.

Every page of Tongue and Tine is plain HTML, produced before publication and delivered exactly as written. The words and the stylesheet are served from this domain and nowhere else. No scripts are included, so nothing measures how you read, and no analytics or advertising service is involved. The pages load no outside fonts, images, embedded videos or sharing widgets, which means a visit makes no request to any third party. No cookie is set, and neither local storage nor any other browser store is written to. There are no accounts, no comment threads and no newsletter.

What nginx notes

Pages reach you through nginx, whose access log writes one line per request containing:

  • the requesting IP address
  • a timestamp
  • the path of the page asked for
  • the HTTP status code returned and the number of bytes sent
  • the page you arrived from, when the browser supplies it
  • the user agent string, which is how the browser names itself

Failed requests may also show up, with an IP address, in an error log. Both logs switch to a fresh file once a day, and no file is kept longer than 14 days. Nobody opens them unless something has broken or a flood of hostile requests needs blocking. They are not sold or handed on, and nothing else is matched against them.

Email

Mail to editor@ingrestaurant.com arrives with the sender’s address and its text, and those two things are used to write back and for nothing else. Neither joins a mailing list or reaches a third party, and a correspondence can be erased whenever its sender asks.

Sources on other sites

Pieces sometimes point to a source hosted elsewhere, such as a regulator or a university. Once you follow one, that site’s own privacy practices apply.

Seeing or erasing what is held

Send a request to the same address to learn what is kept about you or to have it removed. In practice the answer is no more than fourteen days of server entries plus your own emails.
