When the fridge dies: borrow the quote, not the limit
A kitchen runs on a few machines, and when one of them breaks, the price on the quote should set the size of any loan.

A kitchen that cooks well every day runs on very little. Something cold, something hot on top, something hot inside. Add a sharp knife, a heavy pan, a big pot and a probe thermometer, and most of what fills a cookbook is within reach, modernist technique included.
What gets sold to a kitchen is a different list: stand mixers that live under covers, air fryers that duplicate a convection oven, fridges with screens in the door. None of it is useless. It just is not the kitchen. The quick test is whether dinner would change if the thing broke tonight. For the gadgets, no. For the fridge, yes, and by breakfast.
What fails, and roughly when
A fridge is a sealed refrigerant loop driven by a compressor, and the loop itself rarely goes. What goes is around it: the door gasket, the evaporator fan, the defrost heater on frost-free models, the control board, the start relay that kicks the compressor into life. The first sign is often a warm fresh-food section above a freezer that still seems fine, because on many frost-free designs the cold reaches the fridge side from the freezer, and a failed fan cuts that off first. A thermometer on the middle shelf should read 40°F (4°C) or colder.
Ovens fail more politely. Elements burn out, door seals harden until heat leaks over the top, and thermostats drift, so a recipe that worked for years starts coming out pale. Gas ranges lose igniters. An induction cooktop is mostly electronics under glass, and when one zone dies the fault is usually a board.
Repair or replace
A repair makes sense when the fault is known, the appliance is otherwise sound and the visit plus the part come to a modest fraction of a new one. A dead compressor or a leak in the sealed system is where most fridges get replaced, since that work needs a refrigeration technician and can cost as much as a new budget model. Ask for the diagnosis in writing with a price.
If it is still young, in Poland
Before paying anyone, look at the date on the receipt. On 1 January 2023 an amending act moved faulty-goods claims on consumer purchases out of the old rękojmia rules in the Civil Code and into the Consumer Rights Act. For anything bought since then, the seller answers for a fault that shows up within two years of delivery, and such a fault is presumed to have been there from the start unless the seller proves otherwise. Under the old rules that presumption lasted one year.
The first remedy is repair or replacement, and the buyer chooses which, unless that fix is impossible or would cost the seller excessively. A price cut or withdrawal comes next, or straight away when the fault is serious. The seller has 14 days to answer a complaint, silence counts as acceptance, and the seller carries the costs, including collecting a large appliance. The manufacturer’s gwarancja is a separate, voluntary promise. It never replaces the seller’s liability, and the buyer picks the route.
What a replacement costs
On a Polish price-comparison site at the end of September 2026, full-height fridge-freezers of about 180 cm with the freezer at the bottom started at roughly 1,150 zł, and plenty of plain white models sat between 1,300 and 1,600 zł. Some retailers charge separately for delivery and installation, so a real quote is the model plus whatever it takes to get it standing in the kitchen and running.
Borrow the quote, not the limit
When the money is not there, the first number a loan offer puts in front of you is the wrong one. The approval shows the most a lender is prepared to lend, and on a first loan that can be several times the price of a fridge. That figure is the lender’s reading of risk. It says nothing about the kitchen. The number that describes the problem is on the quote: the model, the delivery, the installation, the total. Borrow that, to the złoty, and let the rest of the approval go.
In Poland, Wandoo is one example of how such a loan is set out. It sells a chwilówka, a 30-day loan repaid in one payment, of 500 to 5,000 zł on a first loan and up to 15,000 zł on later ones. Its representative example is 1,500 zł, which costs 180.14 zł in total (162.32 zł commission and 17.82 zł interest), so 1,680.14 zł is repaid, at an RRSO of 297.43 %. It lends only to Polish citizens or permanent residents aged 18 to 80 who hold an account at a Polish bank and have regular, verifiable income. A 1,300 zł fridge borrowed as 1,300 zł and the same fridge borrowed as 5,000 zł are two very different loans.
The gap matters because the charges on a loan are calculated on the amount borrowed, so every złoty above the quote is paid for with nothing broken to show for it. The surplus also rarely survives as a surplus. It goes on groceries, or on a second appliance that seemed sensible while the offer was on screen, and it still has to be paid back. Getting the quote before applying keeps the order right: the fridge sets the amount, and the lender only answers whether it will lend that much.
Rent, food and the bills that come around every month are another story, since no quote exists to shrink them. When the money is short for those, Poland offers free help: nieodpłatne poradnictwo obywatelskie, civic counseling given at about 1,500 points with at least one in every county, which by law includes advice for people in debt. It is open to anyone who states they cannot afford paid advice, and appointments can be booked through the government line on 22 52 12 888 on weekdays.
Making the next one last
Whatever arrives, a few habits push the next failure further out. Leave the gap behind and above the cabinet that the manual asks for, because a compressor that cannot shed heat runs longer and wears sooner. Vacuum exposed condenser coils once or twice a year. Close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the frame, and if it slides out with no drag, the gasket is leaking cold. Keep the thermometer on the middle shelf and glance at it now and then, since it will report a failing fan weeks before the milk does. And file the receipt somewhere findable, because for two years from delivery it is the paper the seller has to answer to.
